CM orders tech push, robust prosecution to bolster rail security

Calls For Overhaul Of Railway Policing

Lucknow: Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday called for overhaul of railway policing in Uttar Pradesh with more use of technology, tighter prosecution process and seamless coordination among agencies to strengthen passenger safety across one of the country’s busiest rail networks.

Reviewing the functioning of the Government Railway Police, the CM underlined that over 30 lakh passengers travel daily across the state, making security, women’s safety, crime prevention and swift response non-negotiable priorities. He stressed zero-tolerance approach towards crime and anti-social activities across railway stations, platforms and trains.

Officials informed the CM that the GRP functions through six zones, 65 police stations and 89 outposts, securing over 3,000 trains and nearly 1,550 stations daily. The scale, they said, demands constant technological and manpower upgrades.

Yogi pushed for enhanced coordination between GRP, Railway Protection Force and civil police. Measures already in place include joint track patrols, CCTV monitoring, drone surveillance, digital verification tools and intelligence-based monitoring of sensitive zones such as scrap markets. He also ordered a focused campaign to eliminate stone-pelting incidents entirely.

Officials said sustained awareness drives and targeted action have already led to a noticeable decline in such incidents, a trend the CM asked to be maintained.

With heavy footfall during festivals, exams and public events, the CM directed strengthening of entry-exit systems, queue management, public announcements and round-the-clock surveillance to prevent stampedes and chaos.

Reiterating govt’s focus on women’s safety, he asked GRP to ensure secure travel conditions and intensify efforts against human trafficking and child crimes.

The CM reviewed prosecution performance, stressing close coordination between investigators and prosecutors to ensure faster convictions. He cited improved outcomes under Operation Conviction and called for further strengthening of case tracking and evidence handling.

Under Operation Muskaan, GRP rescued 860 children between Jan and May 2026, while over 2,300 missing persons were reunited with families. The Hardoi GRP station’s ISO 9001 certification was also highlighted.

The CM directed preparation of a roadmap for GRP expansion, modern equipment and additional manpower, assuring full state support. He also called for early planning and coordinated security arrangements for Ardh Kumbh 2027, anticipating massive rail traffic.

Officials said the aim is to transform GRP into a technology-driven, responsive force aligned with evolving security challenges.
