LUCKNOW: Amid chants of 'Om Namah Shivay' and 'Bum Bum Bhole' a large number of devotees thronged Shiva temples across the city to celebrate Mahashivaratri on Saturday.
The celebrations began past midnight and continued till dusk.
Bhajans and bhandaras were organised across the city even as people did abhishek of the deity with milk, water, curd and honey.
Besides, Shiva baraat were taken out where people dressed up as Shiva (behroopiya) were revered by devotees. According to legend, on the day Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married.
One of the most famous Shiv baraats that begins from Kalyangiri temple in Thakurganj and reaches Koneshwar Mahadev Mandir in Chowk via Balaganj was organised after a gap of three years. People dressed as Shiva's ganas, gods and goddesses amid the beats of dhol, DJs, a splash of gulal and fireworks participated in the event.
At Mankameshwar temple, two friends Ayushi Chawla (27) and Astha Tiwari (25) were clicking selfies while standing in a queue. "We will post the photographs on social media so that we can cherish this memory forever," said Chawla.
A devotee Rahul Sharma (23) said praying to Lord Shiva has always helped him get what he desired.
"I hopped several temples in Indiranagar and now will be heading towards Niralanagar and Mankameshwar temple to seek blessings of the lord," Sharma said.
Shyamali Dubey (63) said she visits Siddh Gopeshwar Mahadev Mandir regularly. "I devote 15-20 minutes daily to worship Shiva here in the temple after all he takes care of all our wishes. I am also fasting on the day," Dubey said.
A Shiv tandav path and white shringar was organised at Narmadeshwar Mahadev Mandir in Niralanagar for world peace.
