"We cannot trust the police, as earlier on February 28, 2013, miscreants struck my house and decamped with

jewellery and utensils.

The case has yet to be worked out as police did not follow up in the case. Had we united instead of depending on police, we would have and dealt with the miscreants for sexually assaulting a girl," said 70-year-old Ram Lal of the village.

Husband of the village pradhan S P

Satyarthi

said each of the 5-6 families residing in the vicinity has adult family members who could have overpowered the miscreants. He added that other villagers are planning to keep vigil.

"Youths of our locality are ready for a night vigil. Also, youths of other villages have assured to help us in night vigil. We cannot just sit and wait for police to help us," he said.

Ranjit

, a youth who suffered a blow on the head during attack by miscreants in 2013, has yet to recover completely. He said every month around Rs 2,000 is spent on his medicines and he is unfit to pick up anything heavy and can't stand for long in the sun. He earns his livelihood by assisting carpenters in the village. "It is shameful we could not protect our sisters and lean on police for that."

Para police station officer Vinod Yadav said five persons have been detained and interrogation is underway. "We are also trying to find out if personal enmity led to the incident. The survivor is now out of danger," said the police.
