Lucknow: Body worn cameras were provided on Sunday to traffic police personnel who man busy crossings. The move is aimed at keeping tab on motorists, who when asked to pull over during checking drives rough up traffic policemen using their political and other clout.

Costing Rs 25,000 each, the camera will be worn by policemen on their chest and secured with a plastic clip. It is also expected to bring down corruption as a lot of times motorists bribe to cover up their offence. Senior superintendent of Lucknow police

Manzil Saini

distributed 28 cameras on Sunday noon at GPO crossing. To avoid tampering with the cameras, a software will keep the high definition recording protected.

"Only the administrator will have authority to delete the recording and passcode will not be provided to anybody else," said Saini, stressing that traffic cop will not be able to overwrite or delete anything from the device. The device will be able to store footage of up to 16 hours at a time. The recording will be saved on computers for three months at

Bandariyabagh

traffic office.

Saini

also interacted with 21 female volunteers of

Ummeed Foundation

which work closely with city's traffic wing to regulate errant motorists. The device will be able to capture 12-metre long road view in evening hours. The city has more than 70 intersections out of which 30 face constant vehicular movement and remain overburdened throughout the day. For box -
