Brain dead man’s organs benefit five recipients

Lucknow: Organs of a deceased donor received by five patients gave them a fresh chance at life at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences on May 29.

Retired staff member of SGPGIMS, Fanish Mani Tripathi, was declared brain dead following a road accident. In the midst of personal loss, his family consented to donate his organs, helping save or restore lives of five patients the same day.

Doctors retrieved two kidneys, one liver and two corneas. The kidneys were transplanted into a 32-year-old man from Bahraich, on dialysis since 2022, and a 31-year-old woman from Amethi, who was undergoing dialysis since 2021. Both had been waiting for a transplant.

The liver was transplanted at SGPGI, while the two corneas were sent to King George’s Medical University and transplanted there later in the day, restoring vision of two recipients.

The retrieval and transplant procedures were completed through overnight coordination between multiple medical teams.

SGPGI director Prof Radha Krishan Dhiman said the institute was working to ensure organs and tissues retrieved at SGPGI could be transplanted within the institute the same day.

“This is an important first step towards strengthening advanced healthcare services at SGPGI and we remain committed to ensuring patients in UP do not have to go outside the state for organ and tissue transplantation,” he said.

Hospital officials described the donation as a powerful gesture that turned one family’s loss into hope for five patients across UP.
