City corporation
will execute rooftop fibre tank method of
rainwater harvesting
only in selected wards in its initial phase on an experimental basis.
It will adopt the model developed by city based Dr C
Balakrishnan Nair
, a retired pathologist of
Kozhikode Medical Government College
on an experimental basis before expanding it to other areas owing to difficulty in executing the scheme in all 75 wards.
The civic body decided to take steps to set up rain water harvesting system on the basis of direction issued by the Ombudsman for LSG Institutions to adopt model developed by Dr Balakrishnan within three months. The direction was given on the basis of petition filed by Dr Balakrishnan before the ombudsman for LSG institutions citing that the rooftop fibre model developed by him is suitable to urban households to tide over water scarcity during summer days.
A delegation led by public work standing committee chairperson already visited the house of Dr Balakrishnan to gather details for its execution in the corporation limit.
Public work standing committee chairperson T V Lalitha Prabha said that the civic body needs to make its own project proposal and estimate for replicating the rooftop fibre tank method of rain water harvesting facility. “We have decided to implement the facility at few wards on a pilot model basis as no agency is there for the execution of rooftop fibre tank method of rain water harvesting.
The engineering wing will prepare the estimate and the scheme will be executed in the current financial year’s plan. The selection of the wards will be made after holding official discussion about the model developed by Dr Balakrishnan. The scheme will be expanded to other wards on the basis of its success,’’ she said.
