Kozhikode council urges Centre to declare Kerala floods as national disaster

KOZHIKODE

: City corporation council meeting chaired by mayor Thottathil Raveendran at the council hall on Saturday urged the Union government to declare the flood in Kerala as national disaster.


The council unanimously passed the adjournment motion moved in the council by mayor Thottathil Raveendran pertaining to it. The council meeting also urged the state government to allot special package for the Kozhikode city corporation to repair the roads and school buildings damaged in the flood.

The meeting also decided to collect minimum Rs one lakh by each councillors from their wards to contribute to CM’s Flood Relief Fund.

The council meeting decided to form ward-level committees for the fund collection drive and decided to complete the collection drive by August 29. The collected fund will be donated to CM’s Flood Relief Fund. The mayor also informed the council that he is donating his one month salary to CM’s Flood Relief Rund.

The mayor said that 1000kg bleaching powder will be brought to Kozhikode for the cleaning of water sources . The mayor also directed the officials to handover the excessive relief material items that were collected as part of special drive to district collector to distribute it to people in other flood hit areas.

Education and sports standing committee chairman M Radhakrishan and lawyer P M Sureshbabu of the UDF urged the mayor to take immediate steps to clean the polluted wells .
