Kozhikode: The city corporation authorities have commenced the repair, maintenance and construction of new roads envisaged under the annual plan programme for the financial year 2015-2016. The civic body has begun work to avoid fund lapse due to non-utilization of funds earmarked in the budget.
The previous city corporation council couldn't float tenders due to non-cooperation strike by contractors owing to delay in clearing their pending dues and bills.

The new corporation council which held discussions with the contractors have succeeded in reaching an amicable solution and agreed to clear their dues at the earliest following which they have agreed to take up the works.
According to the corporation office, the civic body has already awarded tenders of around 200 road works in the 75 wards. The civic body has also earmarked Rs 5 lakh each to sectors to carry out patch up works. The previous council had made Rs 8.14 crore budgetary allocation for the development of various roads during the 2015-2016. The civic body has a total of 11 engineering sectors in the corporation. The work worth Rs 52 lakh has been progressing at various wards in the corporation.
Public works standing committee chairperson T V Lalitha Prabha said that the civic body has already commenced the repair, surface improvement and construction of new roads in the 75 wards. "We have been awarding tenders to contractors on road works envisaged as carryover projects of 2014-2015 and budgetary allocation made under the 2015-2016. Our aim is to complete the works on stipulated time. A meeting held on Monday had approved the tenders of another 62 road works," she said. "The road resurface improvement works and patch works have already completed in some of the wards," she said.
