KOLKATA: A 60-year-old woman living alone at a flat on south suburban fringes of the city was found dead under mysterious circumstances on Wednesday morning. The victim, Keka Mukherjee, was a resident of Gitanjali Apartments located in the

Bansdroni

Park area close to the Masterda Surya Sen (Bansdroni) Metro station. Cops have not found any foul play, but said her death was slow and painful.

According to the society secretary Sanjib Kumar Ghosh, the victim had moved to the flat about 11 years ago along with one of her brothers who took

VRS

from a reputed engineering firm. About three years ago, her brother died. However, both the woman and her brother were unmarried.

“Since 2016, she had contacted a local tea stall-cum-eatery to supply her lunch and dinner. This continued for about a year and she failed to pay Rs 15,000 to the stall owner. The

eatery

then stopped supplying food to her. A few months ago, a relative appointed a maid for the woman who also left after Mukherjee failed to pay her salary,” said Ghosh.

About two and a half days ago, the residents of the building started getting a stench and Ghosh informed the

police

about the matter on Wednesday. “We found the

decomposed

body of the woman lying on a sofa. She apparently had no

external injury

. Subsequently, we came to know that the woman was staying alone in the flat. We got a phone number of her brother whom we are trying to contact. Her body has been taken to M R Bangur Hospital for post-mortem,” said DC (south suburban), Sudip Sarkar.

According to the police sources, none of the victim’s relatives was ready to claim her body till Wednesday afternoon. “The eatery from where the woman used to order food had kept a contact number of one of her relatives. When the relative living at Belgachhia was called up, we were told that he had nothing to do with the incident and that we should contact another relative at Golf Green, to whom the victim had handed over her property. We contacted the second relative who also told us not to disturb him,” said Ghosh.
