Durgapur gang-rape: MBBS student's father raises suspicion over male friend’s role; classmate detained
DURGAPUR: A second-year medical student was allegedly gang-raped by four-five unknown men outside the institute campus in Durgapur on Friday evening shortly after she went out for dinner with a male classmate. Cops have detained the classmate after the girl's parents, who hail from Balasore in Odisha, alleged he and his associates were behind the crime.
The 23-year-old survivor is currently admitted in hospital. Based on her complaint, police have registered a case of gang rape and started an investigation. Her statement has been recorded and the male students is being questioned.
According to the complaint, the rape happened between 8.30 pm and 9 pm in a desolate spot around 1.5 km from campus. The duo were stopped by four-five men who snatched the girl's mobile phone and demanded money.
When the male student left the spot, three youths dragged the girl to a secluded area and gang-raped her. Later, the classmate returned to the spot, found her in a critical condition and took her back to hostel.
A press release issued by the private medical college said the two students left campus at 7.58 pm for dinner. One of them returned at 8.42 pm, but after loitering around the main exit for five-six minutes, stepped out again at 8.48 pm. The two then returned at 9.29 pm and the female student proceeded to the girls' hostel at 9.31 pm.
"Later it came to light that while outside the campus, the female student endured an assault, an occurrence she herself claimed and reported," the note said.
The survivor's father said he learnt of the incident around 10 pm when the classmate called him.
The survivor's parents reached Durgapur around 5.30 am Saturday. "My daughter's classmate took her outside the campus to have phuchka. Then, her male friend left the spot. Four to five outsiders snatched Rs 200 from my daughter and demanded Rs 3,000. One of them raped her. When my daughter started bleeding, her male friend returned and took her back to the hostel," the father said, expressing suspicion over the conduct of the classmate.
A source said the two had stepped out to visit a hangout zone. "It is a bit desolate. They were sitting there when a few outsiders accosted them and demanded money. The male student said he could pay online, but the outsiders wanted cash. The rape occurred after he left to get cash," he said.
After returning, the girl did not disclose the incident to her room-mate. At night, she was shifted to a hospital after she began bleeding. The incident came to light after her parents reached Durgapur. "It was a mistake to send my daughter here to study MBBS. This incident has caused her extreme mental and physical trauma," the father said. Students have started a sit-in demanding an impartial probe.
