NEW DELHI: An private
airline
has been ordered by a Kolkata court to cough up Rs. 52,000, after two of their clients'
honeymoon
was ruined when their baggage arrived late at Bengaluru airport, forcing them to miss their connecting flight.
The court told the airline to pay the couple - Mridul and Richa - Rs. 2,000 in court fees, and pay a fine of Rs. 50,000, nearly six years after the incident.
In December 2010, Mridul and Richa were travelling to the Maldives via Garden city's airport, where they noticed that their luggage wasn't on the conveyor belt. They couldn't leave without their bags, because their passports were in them. When they finally got their luggage, the flight that would have taken them to their honeymoon destination had already left.
The couple sought justice at the Kolkata court of the Consumer Forum, which held the
airline company
responsible. The company then appealed to the State Consumer Forum, but to no avail: the forum found in favour of the couple, saying that the airline's irresponsibility was to blame, and that it should offer its two clients compensation.
The airline said that it wan't at fault, for its staff had put Mridul's bag on the conveyor belt, and that another passanger had taken it by mistake. It added that it had been able to track down the passenger and bring the bag back from Kerala after Mridul and Richa complained. However, the court refused to accept its excuses, and ordered it to pay up.
