KOLKATA: Former Calcutta high court judge

justice CS Karnan

on Thursday pledged to help prisoners in legal matters.

Karnan, who left the

Presidency Correctional Home

premises at about 11am, asked the prison inmates to reach out to him if they want legal advice from him. He promised to help them for free.

Karnan was arrested from Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu on June 20 after he had evaded the police for over a month.

The apex court had sentenced him to six months in jail on May 9. Karnan was a serving judge of the Calcutta HC.

He is the first sitting high court judge to have been sentenced to jail.

At the time of his release, Karnan was seemingly overwhelmed with emotions for the treatment he recieved from his fellow inmates and jail staff.
