Jadavpur University campus residents urge registrar to take dog-control measures

Kolkata: A letter, signed by 607 Jadavpur University campus residents, including teachers, non-teaching staff, and scholars, submitted a letter to the JU registrar, demanding that measures be taken to control the dog population on campus amid an alarming rise in cases of dog bite.

The campus residents submitted eight demands to the registrar, which include sterilization and vaccination of all campus dogs and maintaining a date sheet. Other demands include the university taking responsibility and bearing all medical expenses of individuals who have been bitten by the campus dogs, and securing residential zones, quarters and hostels, with proper fencing, iron nets, gates and 24X7 security personnel to keep stray dogs away.

“Since the residents use gates 4 and 5 for entry and exit, dogs should not be allowed to roam freely in that zone,” said a professor who lives in the quarters.

A staffer said, “The administration is reluctant to enforce any measure but we urge them to take steps on a war footing.”
