HC: Ensure green fuel use by Maidan clubs

Kolkata: In response to a petition filed by green activist Subhas Datta regarding the deterioration of the Victoria Memorial Hall due to the state's failure to comply with a Supreme Court order, the Calcutta High Court directed the KMC to ensure that Maidan clubs switch from fossil fuels to cleaner alternatives in their kitchens.The division bench of Justice Debangsu Basak and Justice Shampa Sarkar ordered the KMC to issue a further notice requiring the clubs to transition from fossil fuel to LPG or electricity within three months. Should they fail to comply, the court stated that necessary orders would be passed to shut down the kitchens of the non-compliant clubs. KMC was instructed to conduct a follow-up inspection before the deadline and submit a report to the Court.According to a report filed by the KMC and taken on record by the court, an inspection held on Jan 25, 2025 revealed that six clubs — Khidirpur Sports Club, Calcutta Judo Club, Rajasthan Club, Eastern Railway Sports Association, Calcutta University Sports Board, and Bangabasi College Athletic Club — were still using fossil fuels. KMC had already issued an initial notice.
