has rejected a petition of a man who demanded Rs 17,000 as compensation from a

matrimonial agency

allegedly for not providing 'suitable grooms for his daughter.


The man, a resident of Kolkata’s

Ranikuthi

, alleged that the agency failed to provide suitable options as promised earlier.

In his appeal, the man asked, "can they play with the future of my daughter like that?"

Initially, the man claimed, the agency sent him details of 10 prospective grooms in a CD soon after registering for the service in March 2015. But the CD did not play properly due to some technical glitches and he was not able to see the details. After few days, when he again started to seek details about those 10 men, he was told that all of them have already got married.

Out of the demanded compensation, Rs.2000 was for registration fee refund, Rs.10,000 for mental harassment and Rs.5000 as the cost for the case.

However, the agency, while rejecting the man's allegations, claimed that it provided the details in a CD as per the customer's demand. But he had rejected all options. The agency further said that it was ready to provide details of more candidates but he did not agree and demanded compensation.

The Kolkata District Consumer Court (Unit -1), while rejecting the appeal, told that petitioner the matrimony agency was ready to find new options, but was stopped by him. The court said there was not question of refund of registration fee as it is clearly mentioned in the terms and conditions that the fee is non-refundable.
