Be ready with relief camps: Govt to 7 dists

Kolkata: DVC alerted the DMs of East and West Burdwan, Bankura, Purulia as well as the divisional railway manager of the Asansol division to a possible flood-like situation once it released 90,000 cusec of water from Maithan and Panchet dams at 3pm on Tuesday. Around 1,20,000 cusec of water was released from the Galudi barrage at 8am on Tuesday, raising the Subarnarekha’s water level, which in turn, spread panic in parts of Jhargram and West Midnapore. DVC announced the peak inflow to Maithon and Panchet dams was 1,32,000 cusec at 9am on Monday and 1,30,000 cusec at 6pm. The state has asked the DMs of seven south Bengal districts to be alert and be ready with teams, shelters and relief materials. The irrigation and waterways department was in contact with DVC and Jharkhand officials, a Nabanna official said. State officials are keeping an eye on Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, E and W Midnapore, Bankura, Purulia, Kolkata and S 24-Parganas. More than 900 people were shifted from Mejia in Bankura to Sonamukhi, 35 camps set up in Purulia and Bankura and 14,000 tarpaulin sheets were distributed. Waterlogging was reported in Ghatal.

Flood alert in south Bengal districts after DVC releases 1 lakh cusecs of water

The Bengal government has issued a flood alert for seven districts in south Bengal after 100,000 cusecs of water was released from the DVC dams downstream. Heavy rain is forecasted until October 5, with the possibility of very heavy rainfall on Tuesday. The release of water may need to be increased, causing concern for the government. Chief Secretary HK Dwivedi held a virtual meeting with district officials to discuss preparation measures, including the shifting of people from low-lying areas and the provision of relief materials.

Karnataka asked to release water at 3,000 cusecs to Tamil Nadu till October 15

The Cauvery water management authority has endorsed the recommendation to release 3,000 cusecs of water till October 15, despite opposition from the Karnataka government. Both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka argued that the condition was poor on both sides. Tamil Nadu demanded a higher release of 12,500 cusecs daily. However, considering the conditions, reservoir levels, and rainfall deficit, the authority ordered Karnataka to release 3,000 cusecs. The Karnataka government argued that the southwest monsoon was almost over and reservoir storage was only at 48% capacity.

Cauvery water dispute: Karnataka told to give 3,000 cusecs, gets 12tmcft relief

The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) has directed Karnataka to release 3,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu daily until October 15. However, the CWMA rejected Tamil Nadu's plea for the release of a backlog of 12.2 tmcft of water. In response, the Karnataka government plans to challenge the decision in the Supreme Court and file an appeal before the CWMA. Tamil Nadu argued for the release of the backlog and requested 12,500 cusecs of water daily until October 15, but this was also rejected. The dispute over Cauvery water continues to escalate.
