KOLKATA: Angry locals allegedly vandalised the office of TMC leader Jahangir Khan in Falta, South 24 Parganas district, on Monday, shortly after his arrest near the India-Nepal border in north Bengal in connection with an alleged extortion case, officials said.
Khan's office was allegedly vandalised by the mob, which smashed windowpanes and damaged furniture in several rooms.
Police said an investigation has been initiated into the incident.
Several packets of relief materials were also reportedly discovered inside the office, further fuelling public anger. Locals alleged that Khan and his associates had withheld supplies meant for distribution among the needy.
"Khan was arrested from the India-Nepal border area in north Bengal," another police officer said.
The Calcutta High Court on May 26 vacated the interim protection granted to Khan, who is facing seven FIRs registered at Falta police station in South 24 Parganas district.
Khan finished fourth in the Falta Assembly bypoll on May 21, despite having announced his withdrawal from the contest a few days before polling.
