2 posing as cops assault and rob duo, arrested

Kolkata: Cops arrested two men for their alleged involvement in a fake gold deal that led to a violent robbery at a Bypass store, where the accused posed as police personnel to threaten the victim. The case was registered on Tuesday, following a complaint lodged by Akash Gupta (34).Gupta and his friend Raju Sarkar were lured by the accused with the promise of buying gold at a price lower than the market rate. On Nov 3, around 3.25 pm, Gupta, Sarkar, and some friends arrived at the Panchasayar playground to meet the accused. A group of men posing as cops apprehended Sarkar and extorted Rs 5 lakh from Gupta. Both Gupta and Sarkar were also assaulted. Gupta fled, and Sarkar was released from the accused's SUV near Ajay Nagar after they took his phone and watch. Police managed to seize the SUV from Titagarh on Tuesday and arrested the driver, Somnath Chakraborty. A raid on the house of Noor Islam Molla (35) in Dholaghat led to Molla's arrest on Wednesday.Molla admitted to being involved in the crime with associates. Cops seized Rs 30,000, believed to be part of the looted money, from Molla. The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate in Alipore sent both to police custody until Nov 12.
