THRISSUR: A 79-year-old patient, a resident of Naduvilakkara near Vadanappally, who has been tested positive for West Nile virus, has died in a private hospital in Thrissur. This is the first death of a West Nile virus-infected patient in the state this year.

District medical officer (DMO) Dr T P Sreedevi said the patient was having comorbidities, including age-related ailments, as well as cardiological problems and diabetes mellitus. The hospital sources said he was admitted to the hospital with fever about a fortnight back, and he had died on May 3. Test conducted at NIV Alappuzha confirmed the disease.

Meanwhile, one more patient has tested positive for the disease in the district. She is in her early 70s and hails from Vellangallur near Kodungallur. Her condition is improving, said health authorities.

There is yet another suspected West Nile patient at Edavilangu whose test results have not yet been received.

"A health camp was conducted in Naduvilakkara on Tuesday and samples from those with symptoms like fever have been sent for tests to NIV, Alappuzha," said Dr K V Geeta, the medical officer attached to Integrated Disease Surveillance Project in the district.
