KOCHI: Covid-19 cases and deaths are fast declining in Kerala. On an average, less than 100 new cases are reported in the state and the active cases are close to 500. Deaths (new and backlog) have also reduced.

Between December 1 and 11, India reported 29 Covid deaths and 2,183 new cases, with an average 175 plus new cases daily.

Of these, 26 deaths (with 25 backlog deaths) were reported from Kerala. The total new daily cases reported during the said period was 800.

“In some countries, there is an increase in Covid-19 cases. However, at present, India is reporting a low rate of hospitalization. In Kerala, there are occasional unvaccinated patients who require hospitalization and sometimes they turn critical and die,” said vice-chairman of IMA Kerala (research cell) Dr Rajeev Jayadevan.

“More than 40% cases in India are now reported from Kerala and almost 90% Covid deaths, though majority of them are backlog deaths, are from Kerala. Yet the overall trend shows that the number of Covid cases and hospitalization is on a decline in the state,” said state health department’s N C Krishna Prasad, who has been compiling data on deaths published by various state health departments and ministry of health and family welfare.

“We still see Covid-related pneumonia in a few patients although the numbers are few. For most symptoms, hospitalization is not required but one can be in-captivated for days together,” added Dr Jayadevan.

However, there is an increase in viral infections and respiratory infections, probably due to frequent change in climate.
