KOCHI: Short spells of heavy rainfall were reported from several places in the state on Thursday. Cherthala and Thycattussery in Alappuzha had recorded 7-8cm of rainfall while Odakkali in Ernakulam recorded 6cm. Many places received 2-3cm across the central and north districts in the state. All districts except Pathanamthitta, Idukki and Wayanad were on yellow alert for isolated heavy rainfall.

Low and high ranges of Idukki also witnessed heavy showers. It rained all through the day in the low ranges of Thodupuzha and in the high ranges of Munnar and Kattapana.

India meteorological department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall warning for the state till October 3. Yellow alert has been sounded for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod on Friday.

Several weather systems are influencing the rainfall in the state. A cyclonic circulation lies over north Coastal Karnataka and another cyclonic circulation lies over north Madhya Maharashtra in lower tropospheric levels. A shear zone runs roughly in lower and middle tropospheric levels and a cyclonic circulation lies over Myanmar and adjoining East Central Bay of Bengal. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over East Central and adjoining Northeast Bay of Bengal during next 24 hours.

Yellow alert has been sounded for Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod on Saturday while two districts, Kozhikode and Kannur are on yellow alert on Sunday.

Thunderstorms with lightning accompanied by gusty winds, speed reaching 30-40kmph, are very likely to occur at one or two places till October 1. INCOIS has issued a rough-sea warning. There is a possibility that the sea will be rough nearshore along the coast because of high periodswell waves.

According to the 24-hour rainfall recorded on Thursday morning, Chalakudy, Kudulu, Padannakkad and Bayar received 5cm rain each while Kunnamkulam and Madikkai got 4cm each.
