Guruvayurappan temple coming up in Vrindavan, the lord’s birthplace
KOCHI: A temple dedicated to Lord Guruvayurappan is coming up in Vrindavan, the divine land of Lord Krishna’s birth and childhood. The ambitious project is not merely a place of worship but a meticulous transplant of Kerala’s unique “tanthric” spiritual ecosystem in the heart of North India, re-establishing Guruvayurappan in Vrindavan. The temple’s physical identity is rooted entirely in the classic Kerala architectural style.
“To ensure total authenticity, the temple is being constructed according to Tanthra Samuchayam, the foundational text of Kerala temple worship. The layout and structural alignment are being guided by the legendary Kanippayyur family, the foremost authorities on Kerala Vaastu Shastra,” said Venmarathoor Sankaran Namboodiripad, the main contractor of the project. Mohanji Foundation is constructing the temple.
The “Kerala angle” extends deep into the temple’s ritualistic soul. “The Eekkad family, the members of which earlier served as the hereditary tanthris (high priests) of the original Guruvayur temple, will oversee all consecrations and ceremonies,” said project coordinator Rajesh Varma.
Besides, the temple flag mast is fully constructed in Pala, Kottayam, and will be carried to Vrindavan for installation.
The day-to-day spiritual management will be led by Eekkad Neelakantan, a traditional Kerala tanthri. His role is to ensure that the rigorous, discipline-heavy Kerala temple management style, known for its emphasis on purity and specific rhythmic rituals, is maintained without dilution in Vrindavan.
The complex will serve as a cultural embassy for Kerala, featuring a koothambalam, a traditional temple theatre designed specifically for ritual arts and Parayan halls spaces dedicated to the traditional chanting styles of the South.
The pranaprathishta (consecration) is scheduled for February 19, 2027. This date specifically aligns with the anniversary of the original installation at Guruvayur, Thrissur. Set for completion in September 2027, the project promises to provide a sanctuary where the “feel and ambience” of Kerala’s most sacred shrine are perfectly preserved in Vrindavan.
