Relentless heat, humidity push Kanpur to the edge

Kanpur: Relentless heatwave conditions tightened their grip on Kanpur on Monday as the maximum temperature climbed to 41.4 degrees Celsius, nearly one degree higher than the previous day, while high humidity pushed the heat index to a dangerous 43-44 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that temperatures are likely to rise further on Tuesday, with severe heatwave conditions expected across the Kanpur division.According to the IMD, the sky is expected to remain largely clear, accompanied by intense sunshine and hot westerly winds. For Kanpur Nagar, the maximum temperature is forecast to touch 42 degrees Celsius, while the minimum may remain around 31 degrees Celsius. Heatwave winds are likely to blow at speeds of 10-15 kmph. In neighbouring Kanpur Dehat, temperatures may range between 42 and 45 degrees Celsius.Weather expert Dr S. Sunil Pandey of Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology said that increasing atmospheric moisture could trigger strong winds, thunderstorm activity, and drizzle in parts of the Kanpur division during the afternoon hours in the coming days. However, he added that temperatures are expected to rise gradually and humidity levels are likely to make daytime conditions more uncomfortable.Residents received brief respite on Monday afternoon when cloud cover persisted for nearly 15 minutes. The relief, however, was short-lived as bright sunshine soon returned, pushing temperatures higher once again.Dr Pandey said the city’s heat index was significantly higher than the actual temperature due to elevated humidity levels. With the heat index touching 43-44 degrees Celsius despite the recorded temperature of 41.4 degrees Celsius, weather conditions remain potentially hazardous, increasing the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat-related illnesses. He advised residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure during peak hours and remain adequately hydrated.
