Rain brings relief as mercury dips further in Kanpur
Kanpur: Residents of Kanpur received further respite from the heat as the mercury dipped for the second consecutive day due to rainfall occurred during the nights of May 28 and 29. The maximum temperature recorded at the CSA Weather Observatory on Saturday was 34.9°C, which was 0.5°C lower than Friday’s temperature.
Although bright sunshine prevailed during the day, southeasterly winds blowing at speeds ranging between 8.6 kmph and 12.1 kmph helped keep weather conditions comfortable and prevented any sharp rise in heat discomfort.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds across all six districts of the Kanpur division during the next 24 hours (May 30–31), providing continued relief from the scorching summer conditions.
According to the forecast, there is a 50 per cent probability of light to moderate rain during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday in Kanpur Nagar. The sky is expected to remain overcast on Sunday with chances of light drizzle. The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 35°C while the minimum may remain near 26°C.
In neighbouring Kanpur Dehat, there is a 60 per cent chance of rain accompanied by thunder and lightning during Saturday night. The district is expected to witness partly cloudy conditions on Sunday morning. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 36°C and 26°C respectively.
Weather conditions changed late Friday night when clouds gathered around 11 pm. A thunderstorm struck shortly after midnight, followed by mild to moderate rainfall. The CSA observatory recorded 3.2 mm of rainfall during the spell.
Dr S. Sunil Pandey, weather expert at CSA University, told TOI that thundercloud activity is likely to increase across the Kanpur division on Sunday, accompanied by strong winds and chances of light rainfall. He said temperatures are expected to fall by another 3°C to 5°C during the coming week.
While the rainfall activity is expected to bring relief from intense heat, humid conditions are likely to persist. Meteorologists predict that the respite from heatwave-like conditions will continue on May 31, June 1 and June 3.
