NGT reviews industrial pollution issues; seeks compliance updates
Kanpur:The National Green Tribunal (NGT), Principal Bench, New Delhi, reviewed multiple matters concerning industrial pollution in the Kanpur region, including water pollution caused by tanneries in Jajmau, Rania, Rakhi Mandi, and Godhrauli village on Thursday.
During the hearing, the State of Uttar Pradesh sought a three-week adjournment to file updated compliance reports. The State informed the Tribunal that a budget of Rs. 2.65 crore has been sanctioned and released to Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur for conducting a comprehensive cluster-based environmental sampling survey. The study will assess pollution levels in air, groundwater, soil, and the food chain. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between IIT-Kanpur and the State authorities is expected to be signed shortly.
The state further submitted that an affidavit detailing compliance with 22 recommendations made by the Amicus Curiae will be filed within three weeks. It also informed the Tribunal that funds have been approved for constructing a boundary wall around the affected area in Kanpur Dehat, and progress will be reported in the next affidavit.
The Amicus Curiae highlighted that the Director of AIIMS, New Delhi has not yet filed the affidavit required under the Tribunal’s earlier order dated July 1, 2025. Counsel appearing for AIIMS assured the Tribunal that necessary steps would be taken and compliance would be filed within four weeks.
The Tribunal has listed the matter for further hearing on July 21, 2026.
