Kanpur braces for severe heatwave, temp may touch 46°C
Kanpur: Residents across the Kanpur division are likely to face another day of scorching heat on Wednesday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting severe heatwave conditions in all districts over the next 24 hours.
According to the IMD, the weather will remain completely dry under clear skies, with no chances of rainfall or cloud cover. Day temperatures are expected to range between 43°C and 46°C, making afternoon hours extremely uncomfortable.
The department warned that intense heat and harsh sunlight between 12 noon and 4 pm could severely affect normal life. Night and early morning temperatures are also expected to stay high, hovering between 29°C and 32°C.
Hot westerly winds blowing at speeds of 15 to 25 kmph during the afternoon are likely to worsen the heatwave conditions and add to public discomfort.
Kanpur Nagar continued to record high temperatures on Tuesday as well. The CSA weather observatory measured the maximum temperature at 43°C, while the Air Force Chakeri observatory recorded 44°C. The minimum temperature settled at 26.6°C.
North-westerly winds were recorded at a speed of 10.1 kmph, while maximum relative humidity touched 42 per cent, creating oppressive heatwave-like conditions in the city.
Weather expert Dr Sunil Pandey said atmospheric conditions are gradually becoming favourable for the further advancement of the southwest monsoon over parts of the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, Comorin region and the remaining areas of the Andaman Sea within the next two to three days.
He added that a western disturbance persists over Jammu and adjoining regions as a cyclonic circulation at an altitude of 3.1 km above mean sea level. Another cyclonic circulation remains active over South Bihar and nearby areas at around 0.9 km altitude.
“These developments indicate the gradual progress of the southwest monsoon,” he said.
