KANPUR: At least eight cattle smugglers from a nomadic tribe of Rajasthan were arrested and 34 cattles were rescued from Bisma village of Kannauj district on Tuesday.
Police said that the rescued animals were sent to 'gaushalas' and two dead cows recovered from the accused were buried. Police station in-charge Parul Chaudhary said that Heera Singh, his wife Rekha, Mohar Singh, Birma, Younus and Suleman, and two other persons, have been arrested.
"During preliminary findings, it has come to light that for every cattle they used to get anything between Rs 4,000 and Rs 5,000. We are interrogating them to identify the people who have bought cattle from them," Chaudhary further said.
"They camp on the outskirts of the village and whenever they get a chance, they take away cattle and sell them to traders. We have come to know that a few farmers themselves catch stray cattle entering their fields and hand them over to smugglers," she said.
