Protests in Sanchore after liquor contractor murdered

Jodhpur: Police on Tuesday detained half a dozen suspects in the murder case of liquor contractor Laxman Dewasi, who was shot dead from point blank range by three persons on Monday afternoon in Sanchore town when he was on his way to Gujarat. Dewasi had about 50 cases registered against him in Gujarat for liquor smuggling, the officer said. According to the sources, Gujarat police had raided Dewasi’s house in Sanchore on Monday morning but he was not there.
“Preliminary investigation has revealed that Dewasi was going to Gujarat to surrender before the Gujarat police,” said a source.
The shooters intercepted his vehicle just after he left his house in Indira Colony and opened fire. The shooters fired three bullets at his head through the car window. He was rushed to hospital where he was declared as dead.
The incident agitated the Dewasi community, with hundreds of members assembled at the hospital and refusing to accept the body until the murderers were arrested. They were assured by the police, after which they cremated the body on Tuesday.
Markets in entire Sanchore town remained shut on Tuesday in protest against the brazen murder. A police officer said that the incident appeared to be a fallout of rivalry among two groups over liquor contracts and toll plaza business. “A suspect identified as Mukesh Bishnoi had attacked Dewasi earlier on two occasions, but Dewasi escaped,” said the officer.
