Committed to Uniform Civil Code: Rajnath Singh
JODHPUR: Calling for "one nation, one rule", Union defence minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday condemned opposition parties for giving a communal colour to the proposal for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country.
Singh said this while addressing a public meeting at Balesar near Jodhpur, where he hailed the land for producing a large number of people who served and are serving in the country's armed forces.
"Our opponents raise the bogey of Hindu and Muslim on this issue (of UCC). Should politics be done by dividing the nation? Can't we do politics keeping all the religions and the entire nation together?" Singh asked the audience.
He added that what the BJP was proposing to do was only that which was written in the Constitution by its makers. The BJP will fulfill their pledge, he said.
"If someone wants the freedom to marry as many times as one wants, this would not be allowed in India," Singh said, emphasising that upholding the honour of women was a commitment of the BJP.
The BJP was also committed to combating corruption in the country, Singh said, assuring that any minister found guilty of corruption will find his place in prison.
"I do not want to claim that our government has eradicated corruption completely from the entire country. Rooting out corruption is not an easy task, but we have sincerely tried to reduce it," Singh said.
He claimed that the BJP does what it promises to do, and has proved so in its 9 years' rule at the Centre.
"Earlier there was a trust deficit with political leaders because of the difference in what they said and what they did. But we took this trust deficit in Indian politics as a challenge. We do what we say," Singh said.
Talking about politics in Rajasthan, Singh raised issues of corruption, communal harmony, and law and order. He called upon the people to bring BJP to power for better governance.
