JAMSHEDPUR: Doctors boycotted work at government-run Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital’s (MGMMCH) OPD on Tuesday after a doctor was assaulted by the father of a four-year-old child who died at the paediatric ward of the health facility late Monday night.
The strike was called off in the evening after Dhalbhum SDO Piyush Sinha’s intervention. Deepak Pradhan, a resident of Devnagar under Sitaramdera police station limits, admitted his daughter Anu to the paediatric ward with fever and related ailments late on Monday night.
“Anu’s condition deteriorated and despite necessary medication, she died around 1am," said Dr Kamlesh Kumar, the on-duty doctor at the ward. He said Pradhan barged into his room after his daughter’s death. “He was accompanied by another person. They assaulted me and I was injured in the head,” Kumar claimed. Soon after the assault, Kumar’s colleagues stopped work and staged a strike in the morning. They also protested outside the hospital superintendent’s office demanding security and action against Pradhan.
“It was also decided that robust safety measures will be implemented to avoid a rerun of the incident. Sakchi police station officials have been directed to probe the incident and initiate action against the accused within 24 hours,” the SDO said. Dr Ravindra Kumar, the hospital superintendent, claimed that the girl had malarial symptoms. “However, the actual death cause is being investigated,” he added.

GMCH doctors end strike after 2 days
The Resident Doctors Association (RDA) of Government Medical College and Hospital in Chandigarh ended their two-day strike after receiving assurance from the UT administration on the implementation of central pay scales. The RDA had been demanding the inclusion of junior resident doctors' names in the notification for pay scales. The strike had caused inconvenience to patients, with longer waiting times in the outpatient department. The RDA is confident that the pay scales will be implemented soon.
