JNAC special officer Sanjay Kumar has constituted teams of city managers, sanitation inspectors, engineers and supervisors to execute the cleaning drive. Thirty four ghats on the banks of Subernarekha, Kharkhai and Domuhani rivers, besides 10 ponds will be cleaned. Thereafter, 10 artificial ponds will be recharged with fresh water. Further, danger zones will be barricaded, he added.

He asked the officials to ensure that the streets are cleaned, lampposts are repaired and temporary lights installed on approach roads.

Currently, the three rivers are littered with puja paraphernalia following the immersion of Durga idols. “The urban local bodies of Mango, Jamshedpur and Jugsalai had cleaned the three rivers after the immersion. But, there are leftovers,” said Kendriya Durga Puja Samiti (KDPS) secretary Arun Singh.

He appealed to the Kali puja organisers to discard the puja paraphernalia in the dedicated pits dug at the riverbanks by the municipal agencies.

Bagbera Mahanagar Vikas Samiti (BMVS) convener Subodh Jha said barricading of the danger zones is needed. The Baroda ghat in Bagbera is one such danger zone, he said.

A festive enthusiast, Sunny Sharma (37), who is a property dealer from Kadma, said due to the uncleaned rivers and ponds, there is an increasing trend among the devotees to dig up small ponds in their backyards for the rituals.

Notably, the four-day Chhath festival will begin on October 28 and conclude on October 31.
