JAMSHEDPUR: An elephant calf was crushed to death over by a goods train near the Gunda Bihar railway station under the Nimdih police station in Seraikela-Kharswan district early on Sunday.
Sources said the calf may have been unable to cross the tracks and left behind sby a herd, which passed some time ago.
The Nimdih police station in-charge, Md. Tanzil, said the incident occurred about 500 metres away from the Gunda Bihar level crossing, located at a distance of 45km from the Steel City.
Police and forest officials rushed to the accident site soon after receiving the news but found that the calf, which was about three-months-old, dead on the tracks.
An RPF official posted at the Gunda Bihar station, R B Singh, said a herd of about 20 elephants crossed the railway tracks shortly before the accident occurred.
