JAMSHEDPUR: The South Eastern Railway (SER) has cancelled over 60 trains, including 32 express trains and locals with stoppages at Tatanagar railway station on the Howrah-Mumbai railway route, between September 29 and October 16. The cancellation, diversion and short termination of the trains will be in effect on separate days during this period. The cancellations come at a time when trains are expected to witness higher occupancies before the Durga Puja next month.

In a statement, the SER said the operation of trains in the Chakradharpur division will be regulated for pre-non-interlocking work from September 29 to October 11. That apart, train operations will be regulated on the remaining days for re-modelling of Rourkela station yard.

The sudden announcement of the cancellation and diversion of the long-distance trains in the festival season has upset the passengers. "Several passengers plan their tour ahead and accordingly book tickets. These works could have been avoided during the festive season,” Arun Kumar Tiwary, president of Chotanagpur Passengers Association (CPA), said.

T Mohan, a 41-year-old resident of Baridih locality in the city, said he will have to postpone his plans of a family visit to Raipur on October 14 for Durga Puja holidays. "The Rajendranagar-Durg South Bihar Express is the preferred train for us to travel to Raipur, but it has been cancelled," said Mohan, a junior engineer with a private firm.

Travel agent, V K Singh, said that in the past one year, train services on Howrah-Mumbai route have been hit regularly for some reason or the other causing the passengers to suffer.
