Raj Congress leadership change talks grow as Dotasra nears six years in office
Jaipur: Political speculation is swirling around the Rajasthan Congress, with discussions increasing about a potential change in the party’s state leadership. As Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Govind Singh Dotasra approaches the completion of his sixth year in the office next month, he will surpass the five-year limit set for organisational posts as per the party’s Udaipur Declaration.
The conversation has been reignited by various social media campaigns that have positioned former deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot as the frontrunner to succeed Dotasra. Insiders within the party indicate that the discourse surrounding leadership roles has heightened in the wake of former chief minister Ashok Gehlot’s comments regarding the political turmoil in Sept 2022. Gehlot’s statements are perceived as a reopening of discussions about Pilot’s standing and future within the Congress framework.
Gehlot has claimed that the events during the Sept 2022 crisis weren’t a rebellion against the Congress high command, but rather a response from party MLAs concerned about the potential elevation of Pilot to the chief minister’s role at that time. His remarks, which came a day earlier, have consequently sparked renewed focus on the internal dynamics of the Rajasthan Congress.
According to a senior party member, at least seven to eight experienced figures are being considered for the PCC chief position, a clear indication of the competitive lobbying that is ongoing within the state unit. Some aspiring candidates are also pointing to the Udaipur resolution, which advocates for a limit on organisational tenures, as a key factor that might sway future decisions concerning state leadership.
There are indications that broader organisational changes within the All-India Congress Committee (AICC) could influence appointments in Rajasthan. With the conclusion of assembly elections in Kerala and leadership shifts and cabinet reshuffles in Karnataka, there is speculation that these changes may precipitate a ripple effect that affects Rajasthan’s political landscape.
Conversely, not all members of the party view the discussions as signs of an imminent leadership overhaul. One functionary characterised the speculation as reflective of political ambitions and rivalries expressed through social media, asserting that there has been no formal conversation to replace the current PCC president. The functionary maintained that the party remains united and organisationally strong.
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi last week lauded the collaboration between Dotasra and leader of opposition in the Rajasthan assembly Tikaram Jully. Gandhi described their partnership as exemplary and urged party members nationwide to emulate their model of collective leadership.
