Jully, Bedam clash in Assembly over NH48 traffic, CCTV plan
Jaipur: A heated exchange took place between Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully and minister of state for home Jawahar Singh Bedam during Question Hour in the Rajasthan Assembly Tuesday over traffic congestion on NH48 (Kishangarh highway) and the govt's plan to install CCTV cameras for traffic monitoring. The debate began after Congress MLA Vikas Chaudhary sought details on measures being taken to ease traffic congestion on NH48 and in Kishangarh. Responding to the query, Bedam said the state govt would install around 2,000 CCTV cameras in phases under the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS).
"We are installing 2,000 cameras in a phased manner to strengthen traffic monitoring and enforcement across highways and cities," Bedam told the House.Jully questioned both the adequacy and the implementation of the plan. "Last year, you spoke about installing 2,000 cameras in Jaipur. How many have actually been installed so far?" he asked, adding, "2,000 cameras are not enough. Jaipur alone needs that many."Bedam said traffic reforms were being implemented systematically. "Serious efforts are underway to resolve congestion issues. Surveys were conducted and additional personnel were deployed where required," he said.Detailing measures taken in Kishangarh, Bedam informed the House that one-way traffic was introduced on Paliyawal Road in the marble area, cuts on the Madanganj link road were closed using barricades, and no-parking zones within a 50-metre radius were created at major intersections."Kishangarh is Asia's largest marble market. Apart from local traffic, vehicles travelling between Jaipur, Ajmer, Bhilwara and Beawar also pass through the town, leading to heavy congestion," he said.Bedam added that 10 CCTV cameras were already installed between Dudu and Kishangarh. "Under the Budget 2026–27 announcement, approximately 2,000 cameras will be installed across the state at a cost of Rs 100 crore," he said.Jully maintained that announcements must translate into visible results. "People want relief from traffic jams, not repeated promises," he remarked.
