Jaipur’s Divyanshi Jain wins bronze at Asian Junior Squash Championship; India bag eight medals including one gold

Jaipur: Pink City upcoming squash player Divyanshi Jain won a bronze medal at the 33rd Li-Ning Asian Junior Squash Championship held in China, while another Jaipur player, Dhairya Gogia, finished 5th after losing in the quarterfinals.

Indian team coach Surbhi Misra from Jaipur said that the Indian team performed better than before, winning a total of eight medals - 1 gold, 3 silver, and 4 bronze. In the previous Asian Championship held in Korea, India had won seven medals.

Divyanshi lost to Japan’s Rio Yoshino in the Girls’ U-13 semifinal 8-11, 11-7, 6-11, 11-4, 12-10. In the other semifinal, Indian player Shanaya Parasrampuria was defeated by Singapore’s Karina Shashi Kumar 11-5, 11-6, 13-11. Divyanshi and Shanaya had to settle for bronze medals.

Surbhi said that Jaipur’s Dhairya Gogia caused a major upset by beating 5th seed Teseka Chun of Hong Kong 12-10, 10-12, 11-7, 11-7 in the first round, but his run ended in the quarterfinals. There, India’s Amarya Bajaj defeated Dhairya 11-9, 11-9, 11-4. Dhairya finished 5th.

Surbhi added that for India, Aryaveer Diwan won gold in the Boys’ U-19 category. Amarya Bajaj won silver in Boys’ U-13, Anika Dubey in Girls’ U-17, and Shiven Agrawal in Boys’ U-17.
