Vande Bharat Sleeper hits 180 kmph in trial run

The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train successfully clocked 180 kmph during a high-speed trial on the Sawai Madhopur–Kota–Nagda stretch, marking a key milestone in Indian Railways’ modernisation drive. The West Central Railway confirmed that the trial demonstrates readiness for full-scale operations under the upcoming high-speed corridor plans. (Picture credits: Kota Railway PRO office)

Designed and built by BEML

The new Vande Bharat Sleeper has been fully designed and manufactured by Bengaluru-based BEML Limited. It uses high-strength stainless steel and features advanced crashworthy structures to protect passengers. BEML engineers developed energy-absorbing buffers and couplers to improve safety during high-speed impacts. (Picture credits: Kota Railway PRO office)

Major boost for Mission Gati Shakti

Railway officials said the trial aligns with ‘Mission Gati Shakti’, the Centre’s flagship programme to enhance logistics speed and efficiency. The success indicates that India’s indigenous engineering capabilities are now at par with global standards, paving the way for faster intercity and overnight travel experiences. 16-coach configuration with 823 berths

The train has 16 coaches—11 AC three-tier, 4 AC two-tier, and one AC first class—providing 823 berths in total. This includes 611 in three-tier, 188 in two-tier, and 24 in first-class sections. The sleeper version is meant to replace traditional Rajdhani-type trains, offering a faster, more comfortable alternative. (Picture credits: Kota Railway PRO office)

Fire safety gets top priority

This train adheres to European EN45545 HL3 fire safety norms, the highest in its category. The interiors use fire-retardant materials, ensuring better protection for passengers. Officials said the design combines speed with safety, making it ideal for long-distance overnight journeys on India’s busiest routes. (Picture credits: Kota Railway PRO office)

Passenger comfort takes centre stage

Every berth is fitted with individual reading lights and USB charging ports. Passenger information systems, digital display panels, and CCTV cameras enhance convenience and safety. The interiors use noise-reduction materials, soft lighting, and improved temperature control to create a premium travel ambience. (Picture credits: Kota Railway PRO office)

Premium experience in First AC

The First AC coaches redefine overnight comfort with amenities like hot-water showers, spacious berths, and plush interiors. Officials said the coach layout has been inspired by international business-class designs, ensuring privacy, style, and ease for passengers travelling long distances overnight. Built for high-speed performance

Engineered for 180 kmph design speed and 160 kmph operation, the train features aerodynamic front ends and noise-minimising bogies. Key systems like propulsion, braking, doors, and air-conditioning have been integrated by BEML to ensure smooth performance even during long-duration, high-speed operations. Smarter facilities onboard

The train comes equipped with modular pantries, automatic exterior doors, and touch-free inter-communication systems. Toilets are designed for odour-free operation, with separate facilities for differently-abled passengers and driving crew. Fire barrier doors between coaches can be remotely controlled for added safety. (Picture credits: Kota Railway PRO office)

India’s next leap in rail travel

The Vande Bharat Sleeper marks India’s transition into world-class high-speed overnight trains. Once it enters service later this year, passengers will experience a blend of speed, comfort, and technology, bringing Indian Railways closer to its vision of safe, efficient, and futuristic travel.
