JAIPUR: After deciding to merge Jaipur Greater and Heritage municipal corporations, the Bhajan Lal Sharma govt plans to reverse bifurcations of municipal corporations in Kota and Jodhpur, a move enacted by the previous Gehlot administration.

Urban development and housing (UDH) minister Jhabar Singh Kharra told TOI on Wednesday, “The formalities for the merger, including the reorganisation of wards, will commence shortly.”

He added, “The division of the corporations was strategically planned by Congress to cater to their vote bank. They demarcated wards to secure political advantage, resulting in formation of boards led by them in Jaipur Heritage, Jodhpur North, Kota North and South municipal corporations.”

An official from the UDH department said, “The govt has evidence to show that the division of corporations without adequate allocation of resources and infrastructure caused inconvenience to the public.”

The official said Jodhpur North and South municipal corporations had become symbols of inequality, with Jodhpur South receiving considerably more revenue than Jodhpur North, leading to disparities in civic services.

Elections for these merged corporations will be held in 2025 as a single entity, officials said. It is anticipated that the number of wards in the unified corporation will not be the simple sum of those in the two corporations. For instance, Jaipur Heritage and Greater combined have 250 seats, with 150 in Greater alone.

“The number of seats will be reduced to two-thirds of their current combined strength,” said an official.

In comments on the merger, Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra said, “Revising the merger of corporations is a significant decision impacting the people of Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Kota. The govt should have discussed this matter in the recently concluded assembly session to seek approval from both the opposition and the public before making such a decision.”
