JAIPUR: Three women, including a New Delhi-based
mother-daughter duo
, were arrested on Sunday while allegedly receiving extortion money of Rs 8.5 lakh from a city-based businessman for settlement in a rape case lodged by one of the accused, police said.
Anuradha Kapoor (43) and her mother Molly (67), residents of Greater Kailash in New Delhi, were nabbed along with their aide, who claimed to be a human rights activist.
DCP (east) Rahul Jain said the mother-daughter duo was earlier booked by Delhi Police in a forgery case and sent to
Tihar Jail
. Anuradha’s name had also appeared in Goa Police’s investigation in a cricket bookie’s murder case.
Additional DCP (east) Lalit Kishore Sharma said Anuradha had filed a case under Section 376 (rape) against businessman Rajendra Vyas at Jawahar Circle thana alleging that she was raped by him on the promise of marriage.
“The FIR was registered on June 7. After filing the complaint, she demanded Rs 15 lakh from Vyas to change her statement before the court,” Sharma said.
Fearing a scandal, the businessman transferred Rs 6 lakh to her bank account around a week ago.
On Saturday, Anuradha asked Vyas to meet her at a hotel tomorrow with Rs 8 lakh as a precondition to change her statement in the court. However, instead of giving in to her demand, the businessman lodged an extortion complaint against the accused. Police laid a trap and arrested the trio from the hotel with the money on Sunday,” Sharma told TOI.
Sources told TOI that Anuradha had lived abroad where she studied finance. “They have a caretaker who posed herself as human rights activist. She had called Vyas and told him to settle the case. Her main task in this gang was to build pressure on the businessman,” Sharma said.
Police are also probing if she had blackmailed other businessmen in Jaipur.
