AJMER: The Ajmer Sharif Dargah committee filed on Friday an application seeking to quash what it described as a 'baseless, false, and incorrect' civil suit that claims remnants of a Shiva temple lie beneath the revered Sufi shrine dedicated to 13th-century saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti.

Amid the heated legal dispute over the cultural and spiritual landmark in Rajasthan visited by millions across faiths, five applications were filed by various parties seeking to become respondents in the case.

Union minority affairs ministry and ASI also requested the judicial magistrate court in Ajmer to include the Centre as a party to the lawsuit. The court scheduled the next hearing on Jan 24.

Representing the plaintiff, advocate Varun Kumar Sinha pressed for a survey of the dargah site, citing the historical text 'Prithvi Vijay' by Jay Naika, believed to have been written in 1191-1192 during the reign of Prithviraj Chauhan.

Dargah committee's counsel Ashok Mathur countered by questioning the lack of specifics in the plaintiff's arguments.

"The plaint in which the Sankat Mochan Shiva temple is claimed does not disclose where the temple is and where it is registered under the Devasthan department of Rajasthan govt. No account of land, spot of temple, or any record of claiming the property is disclosed by the plaintiff," he said.
