Indore: The hospitality sector is eyeing a jump in business this year as occupancy in hotels has jumped amid back-to-back large-scale events scheduled in the city and leisure travel. The room occupancy in hotels in February is estimated over 80 per cent, according to hoteliers amid a sharp spike in demand for rooms from corporates and government events happening in the city.According to the Hotelier Association of Indore, the city has close to 7,000 rooms in different categories.Sumit Suri, chairman, MP Committee, Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India said, “Hotel rooms are in high demand in Indore because of several events scheduled in the city. For Kehlo India around 800 hotel rooms are booked across different hotels and in the coming days more bookings will take place ahead of G20 and some large scale religious events.”In February, occupancy in hotels is expected to remain over 80 per cent, said hoteliers.Hotelier Ranjan Das, general manager, cluster at a luxury hotel at Indore said, “There is an upward swing in the hospitality sector. Business is seen growing by around 20 per cent as against last year due to a spike in demand for rooms and events happening in the city.”Hotel tariffs have gone up by an average 20-30 per cent across hotels but despite the rise in tariffs, hotels expect a jump in business from corporates and leisure travellers.Hoteliers said Indore being centrally located and well connected with the air route has seen a surge in large scale events and more hotel rooms need to be constructed.Suri said, “Looking at the demand in Indore, around 4,000 more hotel rooms are required. We have put this matter in discussion at the recently concluded meeting of leading hoteliers in Mumbai and have invited players for investment in the hotel segment.” TNN
