UJJAIN: Five people, including a woman, who were found guilty of conducting kidney transplant, have been sentenced to 10 years of jail. The court also ordered fresh probe against doctors, who were given clean chit before.
According to additional public prosecutor Rakesh Gehlot, one of the accused, Rajendra Nagar, was arrested from a hotel in Indore in June 2008, for alleged involvement in purchasing kidneys of poor people and selling them to rich through an Ahmedabad-based hospital.
Rubber stamps and relevant documents for showing the transplant as donations were recovered from him. Police in Mahakal after investigation had arrested accused Palak Patel, Rajesh Sen, Vinod Bhai and Girish Bhai from Gujarat. The court convicted all under section 467,468 and 472 of the IPC with imprisonment of 7 years, and 3 years under Human Organ Transplantation Act. Rajendra Nagar died during the trial.
Police gave clean chit to three doctors, Sonal Dayal, Chetan Shukla and Kamlesh, all residents of Ahmedabad. The prosecutor urged the court for fresh probe against three doctors under section 319 of IPC. The court has also written to IGP and SP for probing role of the then Mahakal police station in charge Ajeet Tiwari for dereliction in carrying investigation in the case.
