IMPHAL: Life came to a grinding halt at the border town of Moreh in Manipur's Tengnoupal district on Sunday owing to a total shutdown called by four civil bodies in protest against the gunning down of John Gangte by unidentified men on Saturday. The four civil bodies - Hill Tribal Council, Kuki Women Union and Human Rights, Kuki Students' Organisation Moreh Block and Moreh Youth Club - while imposing the total shutdown, also said that Gangte's killers should be brought to book within the next 24 hours.

Gangte (34), a resident of Sugnu area in Chandel district, was shot dead on the road at a spot between Mission Veng and Ngamkhai Veng. Sources said Gangte was the Moreh town commander of the United Kuki Liberation Front (UKLF), one of the 25 Kuki militant groups that signed a peace agreement and has been holding peace talks with the Centre and state.
