Manipuri films make it to fest in Russia

Imphal: Manipuri filmmaker Haobam Paban Kumar’s narrative feature films, ‘Joseph’s Son’ and ‘Nine Hills One Valley’, have been selected for the 20th Altyn Minbar Karan International Film Festival, which began in Kazan, Russia, on Friday.While ‘Joseph’s Son’ will compete in the main awards section, ‘Nine Hills One Valley’ will feature in the non-competition section, under the ‘The Fate of Indian Tribes’ category. Both films, delving into the complexities of Manipur’s multi-ethnic society, present a narrative that resonates deeply with the struggles and hopes of the people.The festival, which concludes on Wednesday, is known for its focus on cultural dialogue and human values, a statement by Sunzu Bachaspatimayum, secretary of Manipuri State Film Development Society (MSFDS), said on Friday.It further read that selection of Haobam’s films was a proud moment for Manipur, adding that they will provide the global audience an insight into a region, often overshadowed by mainstream narratives. The film festival, which started in 2005, has become a significant cultural event, drawing filmmakers and cinephiles around the world, the statement said.Haobam’s foray into fiction began with his debut film ‘Loktak Leirembee’ (Lady of the Lake) in 2016, which was acclaimed for its poetic style and political commentary.
