IMPHAL: Janata Dal-United (JD-U) candidate Kangabam Jadu Singh, who contested from Wanghem seat in Thoubal district in the recently concluded 12th state assembly polls, has been suspended from the primary membership of the party for his alleged involvement in smuggling of drugs.

Imphal West district police commandos on Monday evening confiscated 9.61 kg of World is Yours (WY) tablets worth Rs 4.4 crore and arrested three persons, including Jadu aka Jadumani (52) of the Charangpat area in Thoubal.

An order issued by Manipur unit JD (U) president and former minister Ksh Biren Singh on Tuesday said, “Such acts of trafficking of contraband are a breach of discipline of Janata Dal (United) as laid down in Article –XIX, para 4 of Rules of Janata Dal (United) under Articles of the Janata Dal (U) constitution.”

It added that K Jadu Singh is being suspended from the primary membership of the party with immediate effect.

The other two accused in the case are Longjam Ratan Singh (30) of Imphal East district and Majnu Miah (37) from Assam, police sources said.

The drugs (88,000 WY tablets) were seized from a car during checking of vehicles under Singjamei police station in Imphal.

On questioning, the driver, Ratan, disclosed that the drugs belong to Jadu and the cops subsequently arrested Jadu and Majnu from Kangpokpi district.

In the election affidavit submitted by Jadu, it was mentioned that he had three criminal cases registered in three different police stations for various offences, sources said. An initial investigation said the accused are part of an inter-state drug syndicate.
