NEW DELHI: Manipur police have arrested 23 individuals involved in the alleged ransacking and arson of several properties, including those belonging to public representatives, during escalating violence in the state. The arrests were made across Imphal East, Imphal West, and Bishnupur districts, with police recovering a .32 pistol, seven rounds of SBBL ammunition, and eight mobile phones from the suspects’ possession.
In response to the unrest, a total curfew has been imposed in Imphal until further notice. The state government also suspended internet and mobile data services for two days to prevent further disturbances.
According to police officials, the violence, which saw mobs target the homes and properties of ministers and MLAs, resulted in eight injuries during the dispersal operations. Security forces, including the Army and Assam Rifles, were swiftly deployed to restore order.
Manipur Police issued a statement on social media, confirming that irate mobs had caused significant damage to public officials’ properties on November 16. In an effort to disperse the crowd, police deployed tear gas shells and other measures. A large presence of security forces was stationed in the region, and flag marches were conducted to ensure stability.
As part of ongoing security operations, Manipur Police have been conducting search operations in sensitive areas, particularly along the hill and valley districts. Efforts are underway to ensure the safe and free movement of vehicles, with 107 checkpoints installed throughout the state.
The situation is being closely monitored by senior officials, with additional security measures being implemented in response to the unrest.
