CPI first to come out with candidate list in Manipur

Imphal: CPI on Saturday became the first party in strife-torn Manipur to name its candidate for the Lok Sabha elections, fielding its senior member and state unit general secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Laishram Sotinkumar Singh, in the Inner Manipur constituency.
Out of the 60 assembly constituencies of the state, 32 assembly segments come under the Inner seat, while the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha constituency, which is an ST reserved seat, has 28 assembly segments. CPI won twice in the Inner Lok Sabha seat – 1967 and 1980 –and once in the Outer seat in 1998.
On preparedness for the polls, he said the party has already begun the groundwork in almost all assembly segments covered by the Inner seat.
“Our party has around 5,000 hardcore members in the state and they have already done public welfare programmes and other party-related works in their respective areas,” Singh said.
“We will soon convene a meeting to finalise our poll strategies, including fixing of the date for starting canvassing and publication of our poll manifesto,” he added.
