Anger over non-tribal director of Manipur tribal department

IMPHAL: Expressing dissatisfaction over a non-tribal IAS officer being appointed as the joint secretary and director of Manipur Tribal Affairs and Hills department, tribal organisations of Manipur have threatened to launch a protest.


The IAS officer, who is a Meitei lady, was appointed to the post by the chief secretary on Monday. The All Tribal Rights Protection Forum, Manipur (ATRPFM) and the All Tribal Students' Union, Manipur (ATSUM) have demanded that the government should revoke the decision. On Thursday,

submitted a memorandum to that effect to chief minister N Biren Singh, a source said.

ATRPFM said since the inception of the department, only tribal IAS officers have been appointed as its director.
