HYDERABAD: Two days of torrential rains brought Hyderabad to a standstill and caused severe damage to properties. Police station, government school and a hospital were inundated, a portion of Balaclava Road caved-in, vehicles were washed away, trees fell and several low-lying areas were affected.
On Thursday morning, people were seen wading through water-logged streets in some parts of the city. According to
GHMC officials, they received 80 complaints of water-logging. Rainwater was drained out in many parts of the city by Thursday, but movement of traffic at Hi-Tech City MMTS station remained out of gear and it took commuters more than an hour to cross a five-km stretch. “It took me over an hour to travel from KPHB Colony flyover to Hi-Tech City MMTS,” said Prashant Kothari, a techie.
In a video that went viral, people were seen trying to hold on to their two-wheelers that were being washed away in rainwater at Begum Bazaar.
The Nacharam police station was flooded with rainwater and services were halted for hours. The rainwater also entered a government school in Goshamahal. Meanwhile, residents of East Anandbagh and Malkajgiri were seen pumping out rainwater using motors.
On Wednesday, Hyderabad mayor Bonthu Rammohan monitored the situation from GHMC command control room as
monsoon teams cleared rainwater from city streets. GHMC commissioner Lokesh Kumar also directed officials to take immediate action on complaints.
