Telangana high court seeks government, police report on Medak custodial torture and death

HYDERABAD: Taking up the case of 35-year-old daily wage labourer Mohammed Qadeer who died after being allegedly tortured by cops, Telangana high court has sought answers from the state government, home secretary, director general of police, Medak district SP, deputy SP and station house officer of Medak.

Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan converted a media report (dated February 19) as a suo motu writ petition and posted it for hearing on Tuesday.

Qadeer's wife alleged that police used third degree methods against her husband which caused irreparable damage to his health, leading to his death. The court took note of the demands from the family and society to punish the errant police and do justice to Qadeer.

Qadeer was detained by Medak cops on January 27 on suspicion of being a chain snatcher. They allegedly ill-treated him in custody. Though Qadeer was later let off because he was found out to be innocent, his health worsened due to alleged police torture and died in Gandhi hospital/
